Segue
On Thursday, July 19th at 7:30 p.m. Rangeley Friends of the Arts present SEGUE in Ritmo, Color y Pasión, a program that explores Spain’s flamenco dance, from the tragically romantic soleá to the passionate tientos and fiery tango, as well as the rich textural flavors of Cuba’s colombianas.
The flash of colorful flamenco skirts, the plaintive plucking of the guitar and the warmth of the violin’s voice thrilled SEGUE’s overflow audience at Lincoln Center’s Bruno Walter Auditorium in April 2009. Highly regarded for captivating the listeners, SEGUE continues to perform to sold-out audiences, including the Evergreen Museum and Library in Baltimore and the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center in NYC.
Founded in 2005 by violinist Sarah E Geller, the New York-based ensemble features unique combinations of award-winning artists, musicians and dancers who have performed in many prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall. The contrast between SEGUE’s hushed and gently poetic phrases and their dynamic intensity both calms and exhilarates the listener. SEGUE’s award-winning artists include guitarist and arranger Jared Newman and flamenco dancer Eva Conti-Alegria.
Geller brings to the ensemble her own personal, defining sound and musical interpretations that move the ensemble’s performances beyond mere dictation of ideas to facilitate a sharing of nuances between performer and audience.
Described as “a consummate artist perform[ing] with convincing vigor and passion,” Geller has had the honor of appearing in recital at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Gainesville Pro Musica in Georgia and St. Andrew Music Society in Manhattan. This season’s highlights include performances on series at The Strad for Lunch in Manhattan and the Community College of Baltimore County in Maryland.
Classical and flamenco guitarist Jared Newman has performed with Flamenco Latino and Andrea del Conte Danza España at Lincoln Center Out of Doors, the Atlantic Theatre, Thalia Spanish Theatre and for The Phantom Lady by Calderón de la Barca at the Soho Repertory Theatre in NYC.
Flamenco dancer Eva Conti Alegria brings a lifetime of music performance and study to her dance. Eva has studied flamenco dance with José Molina, Omayra Amaya, La Meira, Elena Andujar, Laura Manzella and Immaculada Ortega. Since 2004 she has been a featured dancer and musical arranger with the Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre.
