RFA presents final concert of Summer Season

Sunday, August 26th, 2012

RFA will present their final concert of the summer season on August 29th 7 PM, Wednesday evening at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Rangeley.

Where in the World??

The Rangeley Community Chorus would like to take you on an exciting adventure Wednesday, August 29. Travel with them, through song, to places throughout the U.S. and around the world. From a river in the Czech Republic to the Big Apple (New York, New York), place names are celebrated in music. An expressive, melodic song about the city of Innsbruck gives way to the foot tapping rhythms of California Dreamin’. From Rio de Janeiro (Girl from Ipanema) to the Country Roads of West Virginia, from the Yellow Rose of Texas to the banks of the Jordan river, and from surfing through Kokomo with the Little Old Lady From Pasadena while Surfin’ USA, the chorus will keep you entertained as they take you off in a new direction with each song. In addition to 8 numbers by the entire chorus, there will be solos and small ensembles featured in such favorites as: Rt. 66, Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, and Istanbul, Not Constantinople.

The chorus is made up of 27 year round and seasonal residents of the greater Rangeley area plus Carrabassett Valley. Membership in the chorus is free and open to all. Church of the Good Shepherd will host the concert beginning at 7:00pm. A ticket price of $10 will help defray the cost of music for future concerts. Tickets are available at the Rangeley Chamber of Commerce and at the door.

Rangeley Community Chorus Christmas Concert

Voices of Christmas, an inspiring, introspective and fun collection of seasonal songs, will be presented by the Rangeley Community Chorus at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, December 19 at Church of the Good Shepherd.

Tickets may be purchased at the door for $10, which helps to defray the cost of purchasing music. The chorus will be joined by the RLRS middle/high school choir to sing favorites Carol of the Bells and Little Drummer Boy. The evening’s selections will include lighthearted fare such as Mister Santa and Up on the Housetop. Several beautiful arrangements will be featured, including Midnight Lullaby, which weaves a new melody together with the classic tune It Came Upon the Midnight Clear. Two contemporary songs, Believe from the Polar Express, and Christmastime by Michael W. Smith will lift your spirits. Some extra surprises will appear in the form of solos and ensembles. And, don’t forget the worst Christmas jokes in the world!

The Rangeley Community Chorus is made up of Rangeley area adults who love to sing, and an adventurous group from Carrabassett Valley that brave Rt. 16 on a regular basis to join us. All are welcome.

The Rangeley Friends of the Arts to present Once Upon A Mattress based on the fairy tale The Princess and the Pea. This musical comedy with music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer has delighted audiences since 1959.

The summer musical Once Upon A Mattress will be held at Lakeside Theater June 29 through July 2nd. If you thought you knew the story of ‘The Princess and The Pea,’ you may be in for a walloping surprise! Due to an unhappy curse, King Sextimus (Les Hoekstra) is unable to speak. Meanwhile, his terror of a wife, Queen Aggravian (Erin Smith), has taken over control of the kingdom. Most importantly, in an attempt to keep Prince Dauntless (Zach Durand) single, she has decreed that only the princess that can pass her test may marry her son. Further, no one else in the kingdom may marry until Prince Dauntless does. Luckily, Sir Harry is able to find an amazing princess, Winnifred the Woebegone (Jaycee Mullen). She instantly catches the attention of Prince Dauntless, and in the end, is able to pass the Queen’s supposedly impassable sensitivity test. When the Queen still tries to prevent the Prince Dauntless from marrying, he tells her to ‘shut up’ which ends up breaking the curse on the king. Now able to speak, King Sextimus regains his rightful position as leader of the kingdom, and all is well.

Reserved seat tickets ($15) are available at the Rangeley Lakes Chamber of Commerce on Park Street in Rangeley 864-5364.

Sandwiched between a cloudy Sunday and a torrential Tuesday the students in grades 3, 4 and 5 from Rangeley were privileged to spend a perfect Monday at Merrill Auditorium with the Portland Symphony Orchestra. This year the Youth Concert was titled “Sounds Like Art.” Weeks prior to the concert, students were invited to paint, choreograph, or write poetry while listening to composers such as Stravinsky, Beethoven ,Vivaldi, and Richard Danielpour . On the day of the concert, pieces would be chosen and displayed on the “big screen” above the orchestra during their performance. To the delight of all of us the first and second place winners were Lauren Eastlack , grade 4, Autumn Skye Williams, grade 3, and an honorable mention to Amber Morrill, grade 5. The Rangeley contingency was so proud of their accomplishments. As the hour-long concert continued our students were on the edge of their seats quietly playing air violins and cellos, clarinets and drums. They were mesmerized and totally involved as the Pirates of the Caribbean finale took them by surprise.

The Arts are Blooming in Rangeley

The Rangeley Friends of the Arts invites the community to join us at our property on Loon Lake Road to celebrate–The Arts Are Blooming In Rangeley! The afternoon event will take place on Sunday, August 12 from 2-4 pm. In addition to a display of the newest version of the architect’s design for an Arts Center, there will be a great program of entertainment. Talent will range from dance presentations to singing, from theater to visual art.

The Rangeley Friends of the Arts is a dedicated group of volunteers with a mission to “increase awareness, knowledge, education, appreciation and support for the arts by making available varied programs of high artistic quality and by related activities, and to operate exclusively for charitable, literary or educational purposes”.

As RFA continues to nurture the appreciation of the arts in the region, it has become very apparent that there is a great need for a facility that will enable programs to expand and grow. The desire is a comfortable “meeting house”/auditorium for RFA programs and other community uses. The RFA’s long-term goal is to create a facility with an auditorium, classroom and studio spaces for learning, creating and displaying all the arts including but not limited to visual, creative, movement, instrumental, vocal and performing

August 12 will be a time to celebrate the past, present and future of the arts in the Rangeley Region. A delicious assortment of appetizers and refreshing summer drinks will complete the celebration. Please bring your lawn chair and enjoy a great afternoon reflecting on the past, celebrating the present, and dreaming about the future.
